Smartphone repair vs insurance claim

Your phone screen shattered. Now what? The answer depends on what insurance you have, how old the phone is, and whether you care about keeping your data intact. Here is the honest math.

The quick decision tree

Screen cracked?
• Have AppleCare+ or Samsung Care with accidental damage? → Use the claim ($29–$49 deductible).
• Have carrier insurance (Asurion)? → Check the deductible first ($150–$299 is common). Repair may be cheaper.
• No insurance? → Third-party repair is almost always cheaper than a new phone.

AppleCare+ vs third-party repair (iPhone)

ScenarioAppleCare+ costThird-party repairNew phone
Screen (front only)$29 deductible$89–$149$799+ (iPhone 15)
Screen + back glass$29 deductible$149–$249$799+
Battery only$0 (if below 80%)$49–$79N/A
Water damage$99 deductible$99–$199 (if recoverable)$799+
Camera module$99 deductible$79–$149$799+
AppleCare+ wins on screens. At $29, it is the best deal in phone repair. If you have it, use it. The catch: you only get 2 accidental damage claims per year, and the phone must be sent to Apple (3–5 business days without your phone).

Carrier insurance (Asurion) vs repair

Most carrier insurance (Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T) is underwritten by Asurion. Here is the reality:

What they charge youWhat you get
$8–$17/month (billed)Device protection + technical support
$150–$299 deductible per claimReplacement device (not always the same model)
$0 after deductibleShipping (3–5 business days)

The problem: the deductible alone often exceeds the cost of a third-party screen repair. And the replacement phone may be a refurbished unit, not new.

The math: A cracked iPhone 14 screen through carrier insurance costs you $150–$200 (deductible) + you lose your phone for 3–5 days + you get a refurbished unit. A third-party repair costs $100–$149, takes 30–60 minutes, and you keep your phone and all its data.

Samsung Care vs third-party (Galaxy)

ScenarioSamsung Care+Third-party repair
Screen (S24, S23)$29 deductible$149–$229
Screen (A-series)$29 deductible$79–$129
Battery$0 (if defective)$49–$79
Water damage$99 deductible$99–$199

Samsung Care+ is competitive with AppleCare+. For flagship Galaxy phones, it is worth having. For A-series phones, the monthly cost often exceeds the phone's value over 2 years.

What insurance does not tell you

  • Refurbished replacements — carrier insurance typically sends a refurbished unit, not new. Your data is wiped. You lose your case, screen protector, and any customizations.
  • Claim limits — AppleCare+ allows 2 claims/year. Carrier insurance may limit total claims over the phone's lifetime.
  • Deductibles add up — if you pay $12/month for 24 months ($288) and make one claim with a $200 deductible, you paid $488 for one screen repair.
  • Data loss — insurance replacements wipe your phone. A local repair keeps all your data, apps, and settings intact.
  • Wait time — insurance replacements ship in 3–5 business days. A local repair takes 30–60 minutes.
Our recommendation: First-party insurance (AppleCare+, Samsung Care+) is worth it for flagship phones. Carrier insurance (Asurion) is usually not worth the monthly cost — put that money in a savings account instead and pay for repairs out of pocket.
