📋 Driver & Firmware Checklist

Before flashing firmware or updating drivers, run through this checklist. It saves you from bricking things.

  1. Back up your current firmware or driver version if possible.
  2. Download from the manufacturer's site — never from a random forum link.
  3. Verify the checksum (SHA-256 or MD5) against the manufacturer's published hash.
  4. Plug in to wall power — do not flash on battery.
  5. Close everything else. A firmware flash is not a background task.
  6. If it fails, don't panic — most devices have a recovery mode. Call us before you try random fixes.

🔧 Recommended Basic Toolkit

The starter kit we recommend for anyone who wants to do basic electronics work safely. Everything here is what we actually use on the bench.

  • Precision screwdriver set — Phillips, flathead, Torx, pentalobe. iFixit's Mako kit is the gold standard.
  • Plastic spudgers and pry tools — for opening cases without scratching. Never use a metal screwdriver as a pry bar.
  • ESD wrist strap — $5 saves a $500 board. Ground yourself before touching anything with a chip.
  • Digital multimeter — even a $30 unit will tell you if voltage is present and whether a fuse is blown.
  • Thermal paste — Arctic MX-4 or Noctua NT-H1. One tube lasts years.
  • Isopropyl alcohol (90%+) and lint-free wipes — for cleaning thermal paste and flux residue.
  • Magnetic parts tray — because losing that one tiny screw on the floor is a rite of passage you don't need.
