Game Boy mods. The brick that started it all, better than new.
The DMG, the Color, and the Advance are the most modded handhelds ever made, and for good reason: the boards take upgrades beautifully. IPS screens, USB-C charging, shells that fit like factory, flash carts. Every mod is quoted after we look: kit cost plus labor, one flat quote before anything starts. Walk in or ship it in from anywhere in the U.S.
What we do on the Game Boy bench
Quoted after we look. The number comes from your board revision and the kit it takes, not from a menu.
Diagnosis
$49The $49 diagnosis answers the real questions first: which board revision you have, which kits fit it, and what the whole job costs. Free when you approve the work, and free when the verdict is not worth doing.
IPS screen mods
Quoted after we lookThe famous mod, done right. A modern backlit IPS panel replaces the dim, greenish original, with brightness control and an on-screen menu for palettes and settings. Matched to your revision, installed cleanly. Kit cost + labor.
USB-C recharge mods
Quoted after we lookRetire the AA tray. A modern lithium pack and charge circuit give the handheld USB-C charging and real battery life, built with proper protection. Kit cost + labor.
Shells & builds
Quoted after we lookNew shells, buttons, membranes, and glass lenses, fitted the way the factory would have: no warped shells, no floating buttons, no scratched lenses. Bring a colorway idea or a box of parts and we build it properly.
Flash carts
Quoted after we lookOne cart, your whole library. We match the cart to your model, lay out the SD card, and verify games load before the handheld leaves. The card's contents are your library to manage.
Why the Game Boy bench stays busy
Handhelds this old fail in patterns. These are the three that walk in most.
The dim, ghosting screen
The original panels were never bright, and thirty-plus years have not helped. An IPS kit is the single biggest upgrade a Game Boy can take: sharp, bright, and readable anywhere.
Corroded battery terminals
Batteries left in for years leak and eat the terminals. A dead handheld is often just this, and it is a repair, not a mod: the retro bench brings it back to life first.
Worn buttons and tired shells
Decades of thumbs. New membranes and buttons bring the click back, and a fresh shell makes the handheld feel new without erasing what it is.
Walk in or mail it in
Game Boys travel well: small, light, and sturdy in a padded box. However it reaches the bench, the quote comes before the work.

What we don't do
Scope stated plainly, so you know before you ship anything.
Honest limits
- Repairs stay stock; mods are their own lane. A no-power or corroded handheld is a repair, quoted on the retro console bench after diagnosis. Once it runs, this page takes over. The full console front door is right here.
- No clone handhelds. The bench works on Nintendo hardware. The emulator clones and pocket FPGA units are a different animal and not our lane.
- The SD card is your library. We set up the cart and the card and prove games load; what lives on the card afterward is yours to manage.
- Full resto-mod commissions are the custom bench. One-off builds, custom paint, and project handhelds live on the custom bench, quoted per project.
Game Boy mod questions
The things people ask before they box up a handheld.
Straight answers
Yes. The DMG, the Color, and the Advance all take modern IPS screen kits, and most kits add an on-screen menu for brightness and palette. We match the kit to your exact board revision, install it cleanly, and test the whole handheld before it goes home. Quoted after we look: kit cost plus labor.
Quoted after we look. A mod is kit cost plus labor: we check your handheld, source the right kit for its board revision, and hand you one flat quote before anything starts. Diagnosis is $49 and free when you approve the work.
Not the way we do it. Your original shell, buttons, and screen come off whole and go back in the box with it, so the mod stays reversible and the originals travel home with the handheld. A clean install on honest hardware is what holds value.
Yes, quoted after we look like everything else on the bench. The SP takes screen and battery work; the Micro is a rarer visitor but welcome. This page focuses on the DMG, Color, and original Advance because that is where most of the mod traffic lives.
Yes, anywhere in the U.S. Request an RMA number online, pack the handheld on all sides in a padded box, and ship it. We diagnose within 3 to 5 business days of arrival and email one flat quote. You approve before any work starts.
Repairs are their own lane on the same bench: no-power units, corroded battery terminals, dead pixels on original screens, and stock-specification restoration. Those live on the retro console repair page, quoted after diagnosis, and this page takes over the moment you want the handheld better than stock.
That DMG deserves better than a dark green screen.
Call the shop any time: our AI receptionist answers around the clock and a human follows up. Or run the repair wizard for a first-pass assessment before you commit to anything. Walk-ins welcome at the Longmont bench, and the mail-in lane reaches every state.
